Climbing vs downwind time

On a parawing session with at least one climb and one run, the Overview adds up both times. The ratio compares how long each takes over the same distance along the wind.

What counts

Climbing
Every climb from start to finish, with its tacks, touchdowns and falls.
Downwind
Every run from start to finish, with its gybes, falls and restarts. This is the whole run, a little longer than the gate-to-gate time on the run’s own page.
Neither
Time before your first climb or run, rests and swims between them, and time after the last. It counts in neither total.

The ribbon under the numbers is the session in time order: climbs in orange, runs in blue, and dashes where you were doing neither.

One number, two ways to read it

Up : down
1.7 : 1 means 1.7 minutes of climbing for each minute riding downwind over the same distance along the wind. Parawing riders often quote about 2 : 1.
Down ÷ up
The same number turned around: 59% means your downwind time was 59% of your climbing time over the same ground. 100% would be an even split.

Tap the number to switch between them. Foil Run remembers your choice on this device.

Why it can differ from the two times

The ratio uses upwind gain during detected climbs and downwind ground covered during detected runs, measured along the wind. If those distances differ, Foil Run scales both times to the shorter distance before comparing them. Only when the counted distances match is the ratio the two times divided. Returning to your starting spot alone does not guarantee that they match.

same ground 4.6 km+13 min29 min19 minClimbing 6.6 kmDownwind 4.6 km
Climbed 6.6 km in 43 min, rode 4.6 km back in 19 min. Over the shared 4.6 km that is 29 min against 19 min, so 1.6 : 1. Dividing the two times alone would say 2.3 : 1.

When it shows a dash

The minutes always show. The number shows a dash when you covered less than 0.75 km upwind or downwind, or when downwind took more than twice your climbing time, as on a downwinder with one short climb. It also waits while the wind is uncertain, as VMG does.

If a stretch you rode downwind is not marked as a run, its minutes and ground are missing. Tell us with Report on the session. The row steps aside while you move a climb or run’s gates, change its wind or remove a climb, because it counts the climbs and runs as Foil Run found them.
